Checking in with a recap of the first ever Bermuda Championship on the PGA Tour! We played at Port Royal Golf Club, on the southern end of the island of Bermuda. Spoiler alert, Bermuda is my new favorite tropical island destination.
It took most of a day to get there, and most of a day to get back, but I loved how the island had plenty to do, without feeling too touristy. The people were also incredibly nice.
The golf course was way more hilly than I would have expected, with several shots each round of over 20 yards of elevation change! It also tested our wind game with strong winds from almost every direction over the course of the week. I also woke up Wednesday morning with food poisoning… I think I may have drank too much tap water (and later read that the Bermuda tap water has a very high mineral content that our bodies are not accustomed to).
However, after an early triple bogey and another ball in the water on my opening nine, I scrambled back to shoot and even-par first round. I got off to an okay start in the second round, but then found a rhythm and a little more energy and made 5 3s in a row on the second nine to shoot 66 and move up to a tie for 27th. I had a mediocre 70 in the third round, and was playing well on Sunday until I went bogey-bogey-double with five holes to play… but the good news is that I birdied four of my last five holes to get all the shots back and finish tied for 35th place.
A cool part of the week was the fact that we took a ferry to the golf course every day… and there was an old defense fort on the 15th hole. I also found some of the pink-sand beaches that made the island famous! While I hope to play in the WGC that is opposite this event next year, I wouldn’t mind making a trip back!
