Marathon in Mexico

Hola desde México!

This week I played in the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa Del Carmen, just South of Cancún. The story of the week was the weather, where the golf course got over 10” of rain between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday night! The course was so wet that we were not able to play at all on Thursday, forcing us to have to cram as many holes as possible into Sunday.

I shot 71-69 to make the cut by two shots, and played 36 holes (with only 20 minutes between my third and fourth rounds) on Sunday. I had a disappointing finish to my third round, playing my last six holes in +3 to shoot another even-par 71… but I finished the day strong with a 65 to move up 34 spots into a tie for 26th place!

The golf course plays pretty tight, with mangroves and jungle on both sides of the fairways… and the famous cave bunker on the 7th hole must also be avoided! I stayed at the Andaz hotel, which had one of the cooler atriums I have ever seen at a hotel. I also got to put my Spanish to good use this week.

And at the close of this tournament, I was top 5 in total birdies so far this PGA Tour season!
